Position Summary
We are looking for a hands-on Azure Cloud Operations & AI Automation Engineer to help manage our Microsoft Azure environment, improve visibility into cloud health and spend, and help our development teams use AI tools safely and effectively. This is a practical, high-visibility role for someone who enjoys keeping cloud systems reliable, secure, and cost-controlled while also finding smart ways to automate routine work.
The role blends Azure administration, operational reporting, DevOps support, and AI enablement. You will help maintain the reliability, security, and cost posture of our Azure subscriptions; build dashboards and recurring reports that leadership can actually use; and serve as an internal resource for using Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar tools to improve engineering workflows. This is not a pure research AI role. It is a hands-on cloud operations role with a meaningful AI automation component.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Azure Infrastructure & Administration
- Administer Azure subscriptions, resource groups, IAM/RBAC, Entra ID, and conditional-access policies in partnership with IT and engineering leadership.
- Provision and maintain core Azure services such as Virtual Machines, App Services, Azure SQL, Storage, Key Vault, Azure Functions, and related platform services.
- Support Infrastructure-as-Code practices using Bicep, ARM templates, or Terraform; help standardize templates, naming conventions, tagging, and deployment hygiene.
- Operate and troubleshoot networking components including VNets, subnets, NSGs, private endpoints, Application Gateway / Front Door, and VPN or ExpressRoute connectivity, as applicable.
- Maintain practical security baselines using Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Policy, and related tools; track remediation items and maintain clean audit evidence.
- Monitor Azure cost and capacity through Azure Cost Management; identify savings opportunities and help teams make cost-aware infrastructure decisions.
- Support backups, disaster recovery, patching, incident response, and production readiness for Azure workloads.
Reporting & Analytics
- Build and maintain operational and executive reports covering uptime, incidents, spend, security posture, capacity, and key project updates.
- Develop dashboards in Power BI, Azure Monitor Workbooks, and/or Log Analytics using data from Azure Resource Graph, KQL queries, and Azure APIs.
- Prepare a monthly cloud operations review with clear narrative, charts, risks, and recommended actions for leadership.
- Automate recurring reports so they refresh on schedule and notify stakeholders through email or Microsoft Teams.
- Translate technical findings into concise summaries that non-technical leaders can understand and act on.
Development Operations Support
- Manage and support Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Enterprise, including repositories, branch policies, service connections, environments, and agent pools.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that promote code safely from development through production using approvals, gates, and quality checks.
- Help maintain environment hygiene across secrets, configuration, dependency updates, and ephemeral environments.
- Partner with engineering leads on developer experience, tooling standards, code review norms, and onboarding for new engineers.
AI Enablement & Automation
- Champion practical use of AI tools across engineering and operations to reduce manual work, improve documentation, and speed up routine development tasks.
- Build or coordinate lightweight automations using the Claude API, Azure services, GitHub Actions, PowerShell, Python, or similar tools, such as incident summaries, activity-log reviews, post-mortem drafts, or compliance evidence packages.
- Help roll out AI-assisted development tools, including usage guidelines, reusable prompts or commands, and examples tailored to our environment.
- Use AI tools to help draft, review, and refactor Infrastructure-as-Code, KQL queries, scripts, and documentation, with human review before any production change.
- Help define responsible-AI guardrails around data handling, secret scrubbing, audit logging, and human-in-the-loop review.
Qualifications:
Required
- 5+ years of hands-on experience supporting Microsoft Azure in a production environment, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong working knowledge of Azure compute, networking, storage, identity, monitoring, and security fundamentals.
- Practical experience with Infrastructure-as-Code using Bicep, ARM templates, or Terraform.
- Ability to script and automate with at least one language such as PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
- Experience building dashboards or operational reports in Power BI, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, or similar tools, including working knowledge of KQL.
- Experience supporting CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or a comparable platform.
- Hands-on use of at least one large language model in a real workflow, such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar tools, plus curiosity to go deeper.
- Strong written communication and judgment. You can turn a noisy incident, spend report, or security finding into a clear one-page summary for leadership.
- Practical, service-oriented approach. You are comfortable owning tasks, documenting decisions, and working directly with engineering, IT, finance, and business stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Microsoft certifications such as AZ-104, AZ-400, AZ-305, SC-300, or similar.
- Experience with Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Policy, Microsoft Sentinel, or security/compliance evidence collection.
- Experience building applications, automations, or agents on the Claude API or another LLM API, including tool use or structured outputs.
- Familiarity with Claude Code, Model Context Protocol (MCP), AI coding-agent workflows, or custom AI development tooling.
- Exposure to FinOps practices, cloud-cost optimization, reserved instances/savings plans, and cloud tagging standards.
- Experience in a lean, fast-moving company where one person may need to move between cloud administration, reporting, scripting, and stakeholder communication.
Success in This Role Looks Like
- Azure environments are more reliable, secure, documented, and cost-transparent.
- Leadership receives clear monthly reporting on cloud spend, incidents, risks, and upcoming needs.
- Development teams have cleaner CI/CD processes, better environment hygiene, and practical AI usage guidance.
- AI tools are used safely to reduce repetitive work, improve documentation, and accelerate engineering output without bypassing human review or production controls.
Measurement of Performance
- Azure environment reliability, security posture, and cost performance against defined targets.
- Quality, consistency, and timeliness of monthly cloud operations reports delivered to leadership.
- Adoption and measurable impact of AI automation initiatives across engineering and operations teams.
- CI/CD pipeline health, deployment frequency, and reduction in environment hygiene issues over time.
- Stakeholder feedback from IT, engineering, finance, and leadership on responsiveness and communication quality.
- General job performance as defined by standard company performance evaluation and requirements.
Experience & Education
- 4-year degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in Azure cloud operations, DevOps, or a closely related infrastructure engineering role.
