Software Engineer — Workflow Automation & ML (Early Career)

Rock Grid Steel · Remote · Baltimore

Job description

Software Engineer — Automation & ML (Early Career)

Rock Grid Steel · [On-site / Hybrid — Washington, DC metro] · Full-time

We're a construction company building our own software — internal tooling that automates the work most firms still do by hand. The bet is a vertically integrated software-and-construction firm where the software is the advantage: every workflow we automate compounds inside a real business that uses it daily.

This is an early, founder-led hire. You'll build the automation and ML at the center of it, work directly with the founder, and own what you ship.

What you'll do

  • Build workflows that automate estimating and project-management tasks.
  • Develop agents and ML that read, parse, and make sense of documents and drawings.
  • Connect our software to the tools we already use, and make the output trustworthy and traceable.
  • Work directly with the people doing the work, and automate the parts that actually slow them down.

What we're looking for

Required

  • 1–2 years of software engineering experience (strong internships count).
  • Solid software engineering skills, and comfort with APIs and third-party integrations.
  • Fluency with modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex) — and the judgment to verify what they produce.
  • A real bias toward correctness. You treat a wrong number as a bug to find, not an acceptable margin of error.
  • The builder's instinct You make things for the love of it — the kind of person who loses track of time on a hard problem and surfaces with something real. You probably have side projects, or things you built just to see if you could.

Preferred

  • Hands-on machine learning experience — document classification, information extraction, retrieval, computer vision, or LLM-based agents.
  • Experience with document-processing pipelines, automation, or workflow orchestration.
  • Familiarity with the Google Workspace APIs (Drive, Docs, Sheets).
  • Exposure to construction, estimating, CAD/BIM, or other messy, operations-heavy domains.

Why this role

We are not a typical tech company, and we won't pretend otherwise. What we offer instead is rare: real ownership, the freedom to build the whole thing rather than a sliver of it, and the chance to see your code run the worlds first vertically integrated construction firm. If you want scope, autonomy, and a problem with no obvious playbook, with the benefit of massive upside.

Compensation

  • Base salary: $95,000–$105,000
  • Equity: early-employee grant — to be discussed

Pay: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00 per year

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Vienna, VA 22180
