About the team

The Australian Space Agency was established on 1 July 2018 to coordinate civil space matters across government and support the growth and transformation of Australia’s space industry. Our strategic vision for the Australian space sector is a globally responsible and respected sector that lifts the broader economy and inspires and improves the lives of Australians.

The Agency’s National Space Safety Office ensures that civil uses of space are safe, secure and uphold the national interest. The Office develops, maintains and implements a fit-for-purpose regulatory framework that adapts to current and emerging space activities complemented by space monitoring functions to provide situational awareness of space objects and events. The office engages extensively to ensure the regulatory and monitoring practices are aligned with national and international norms, guidelines and treaty obligations.

The Space Monitoring team delivers and operates systems that monitor space objects and events relevant to Australia’s interests. The team works across engineering, operations and external engagement, integrating data, technology and analysis to provide timely, reliable advice and reporting about space events relevant to Australian government stakeholders. The work involves close collaboration with industry, academia and domestic and international government partners.

The opportunity

As an EL1 Senior Space Data Scientist, you will lead the team that designs, builds, operates and maintains the data analytics and systems that are the core of our space monitoring capability. You will lead the design and operation of data analytics, guide a small team of specialists, and translate complex space data into insights that inform senior decision-makers.

What you will do

As the Senior Space Data Scientist, you will:

• Lead the design, operation and continuous improvement of space monitoring dashboards, databases and reports
• Provide expert analysis and data presentations related to space objects and events to senior Agency and government stakeholders
• Provide leadership, coaching and direction to staff engaged in space monitoring data analysis and operations
• Undertake advanced analysis to identify trends and insights in space monitoring data
• Identify and implement improvements to space monitoring processes and systems
• Lead engagement with digital and ICT partners to develop and transition space data systems
• Build and maintain relationships with domestic and international stakeholders to support civil space monitoring outcomes

Eligibility

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree or have completed or be pursuing post-graduate qualifications related to data analysis, for example in Data Science or Computer Science.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

This position requires a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

Demonstrated experience in developing and operating complex data analytics systems is highly desirable, particularly in the context of monitoring space activities.

The department offers flexible work opportunities for many roles. This vacancy is Adelaide or Canberra based. Relocation support is available if required by a selected applicant.
