About the role

We are looking for a AI Engineer to join our Data & AI team in Sydney.

AI will play a defining role in Stake's next chapter. As we continue to scale, we see enormous opportunity to unlock better experiences for customers, accelerate how teams operate and build entirely new capabilities powered by emerging technology. This role sits at the centre of that ambition.

You'll join a team focused on turning AI from potential into production. Working closely with engineers, product managers, data specialists and business stakeholders, you'll build products, platforms and systems that create meaningful value across the company. From customer-facing experiences to internal tools and intelligent workflows, you'll help shape how AI is applied at Stake.

Reporting to the Head of Data & AI, you'll have the autonomy to experiment, the ownership to drive outcomes and the opportunity to influence the technical foundations that support our long-term AI strategy. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

Within your first two years at Stake, you will have:

• Delivered multiple AI-powered products and capabilities that create measurable impact for customers and teams across the business.
• Established scalable patterns, infrastructure and engineering standards that enable Stake to build, evaluate and deploy AI solutions with confidence.
• Built reliable production-grade systems that balance experimentation, performance, governance and customer experience.
• Helped teams automate complex workflows, improve decision-making and unlock new levels of productivity through practical AI applications.
• Identified and delivered high-impact opportunities where generative AI creates meaningful business value rather than novelty.
• Influenced architectural decisions and technical direction across Stake's growing AI ecosystem.
• Contributed to a culture of curiosity, learning and rapid iteration that continues to elevate AI capability across the company.
• Become a trusted technical partner who helps the business navigate the fast-moving AI landscape with strong judgement and clear thinking.

You'll thrive here if…

• You have strong software engineering fundamentals and deep experience building and shipping production systems, particularly in Python.
• You combine technical depth with practical judgement, knowing when to explore, when to simplify and when to move quickly.
• You're energised by ambiguity and enjoy taking ownership of problems from discovery through to measurable outcomes.
• You think beyond models and prompts, caring deeply about reliability, scalability, product experience and long-term maintainability.
• You communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences, creating alignment and momentum around complex ideas.
• You stay curious, actively evaluating emerging models, tools and techniques while maintaining a sharp focus on real-world impact.

Bonus if you've ever

• Built and deployed customer-facing AI products used at meaningful scale.
• Worked with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic systems, orchestration frameworks or AI evaluation tooling.
• Developed AI platforms, infrastructure or developer tooling that enabled other teams to move faster.
• Worked in fintech, investing or another highly regulated environment.
• Helped shape AI governance, adoption frameworks or company-wide AI strategy.
• Built systems using Java, Go, JavaScript or other modern backend technologies.
